On Portraiture: In our kitchen, on the refrigerator there is a small picture of a woman's likeness carved in stone. A portrait. It dates back to ancient Rome, Pompei, circa first century A.D. I see it every morning and wonder "Who was this woman? What was she like? She must have eaten and slept and loved like any of us." I think the thing that I love most about portraiture is the haunting connection between the past and the future and the entanglement of the artist, the subject and the viewer. One hopes that when a viewer engages that static art object, something about the subject becons "See me, know me, I am like you, we are connected."
